Osmose Inc. is a software company based in Burlington, Vermont, that focuses on creating content-based routing and carrier-grade networking solutions for the enterprise. Osmose provides software tools that deliver a comprehensive suite of solutions for content and software optimization to enterprise networks.
History
Osmose was founded in 1995 by Fabian Klauer, Nada Das and David C. Fretwell, all MIT graduates. The company was originally named "Osmose Communications," then "Osmose," before finally becoming "Osmose Inc." in 1999.
Osmose originally focused on the development of content-based routing technologies. The company grew rapidly during the dot-com boom, and in 2001 the company was named one of the "Top 15 Companies To Watch" by Business 2.0. In 2003, the company was named one of Inc. Magazine's "Best Places to Work." Osmose acquired provider of a software-defined networking (SDN) product, named the OpenFlow Switch, in May, 2012.
The company was acquired by Motorola Solutions for $177 million in 2010. In 2015, Osmose was acquired by IBM for $525 million in a cash-and-stock deal.
In November 2018, Osmose completed the acquisition of Ministrip, a New York-based provider of content-based networking solutions for the enterprise. Osmose now integrates the Ministrip portfolio into its own software-based routing and content management (R&CM) solutions to provide a comprehensive enterprise-wide R&CM solution.
Business
Osmose's solutions are primarily based around the implementation of its "Route Intelligence" technology platform. This platform uses software to gather data from the packet-switched network, and to analyze and track that data. Using this data, Osmose can understand and respond to the requirements of the network, including where and how to route traffic.
Osmose's primary customers include Fortune 500 companies, as well as public sector organizations.
